Windows NT 4.0 seems fine, but you cannot print consistently with version 2.3. RaneWare version 2.2 does seem to print correctly under NT 4.0.
RaneWare does not work in any modes under Windows 2000. It "crashes and burns" if not immediately after startup, then soon after. WOW32.DLL is the most common problem witnessed under Windows 2000.
Under Windows ME, it seems "OK" in offline mode and fairly inconsistent in online (i.e. hardware connected) mode.
Windows XP with the Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. Rane did testing of Raneware on Windows XP using several different USB Serial Adapters. On most, the results were dismal at best, however we do have one winner. The Keyspan USB Serial Adapter P/N: USA-19HS has worked without problem under all tests of Raneware on Windows XP. Its been tried on a Dell and generic desktop as well as laptops from Sony, Dell, and Compaq. It ran 24 hours on the generic desktop without any failures.
You do not need to reinstall Raneware to use the new USB adapter. To use the Keyspan adapter with Raneware do the following:
1) Insert the Keyspan supplied CDROM and install the Keyspan USB Adapter Software.
2) Plug in the Keyspan adapter to an available USB Port. The USB adapter will be automatically detected by Windows XP.
3) Verify that the COM Port assignment for the USB adapter is between COM 1 and COM 4 (Raneware only supports COM Ports 1-4). To Verify:
a. Start the "Computer Management". This application is located under "Administrative Tools" found in the Control Panel.
b. Select "Device Manager" from the tree at the left of the application.
c. Select "Ports (COM & LPT)" from the tree on the right side of the application. Under "Ports" select "Keyspan USB Serial Port (COM#)". Look at the number in the '#' position. This will be the COM Port number automatically assigned by Windows XP. If this number is 5 or greater it will have to be changed to fall within 1 and 4. If it needs to be changed continue with step d) otherwise move on to step 4.
d. Select "Properties" under the main "Action" menu.
e. Click on the "Port Settings" tab and then click the "Start Assistant" button.
f. Now click the "Port Mapping" tab.
g. In the combo box at the right of "COM port mapping for selected adapter port:" select an available COM port in the range of 1 to 4. Answer yes to the confirmation dialog.
h. Close out all the dialogs by clicking OK and you are done.
4) Launch Raneware and select "System Setup" under the main "System" menu. In this dialog select the appropriate COM Port (Discovered/Set in #3 above) and Select RS-232 in the Connection group box. Click OK.
5) Launch Raneware and select "Select" under the main "Device" menu. Click the Poll button. The connected device will appear in the list. Select it and click OK.
6) The connected device will be loaded and you are ready to go!
